How to Keep Your Website Running Smoothly (Without Stress)

Running a small business comes with a to-do list that seems to magically refill itself overnight (if only websites watered your houseplants or made you a cuppa, right?). If you’ve got a WordPress website, you already know it’s a brilliant platform – but like any tool, it needs a little TLC to keep doing its job well.

Here’s how you can keep your website in top shape, stay secure, and avoid those stress-inducing tech hiccups.

Why Ongoing Website Care Matters

Your website is often the first place people get to know you. It’s your digital front door, open 24/7, quietly working in the background. But behind the scenes, WordPress sites rely on a whole ecosystem – core software, themes, and plugins – that all need to stay up to date.

Failing to keep these elements updated can lead to:

  • Security vulnerabilities

  • Slow loading times

  • Broken features or styling

  • Incompatibility issues

It’s a bit like forgetting to water a plant: things might look okay for a while, but eventually, something wilts (and in this case, it might be your contact form or homepage!).

Security: More Than Just a Plugin

A big part of website maintenance is keeping it secure. Cyber threats aren’t just something that affect giant corporations – small businesses, freelancers, and charities are common targets, often because their defences are easier to bypass.

Regular updates are your first line of defence. They patch known vulnerabilities and keep hackers out. You don’t have to take my word for it – The South West Cyber Resilience Centre provides some brilliant, accessible advice for small business owners looking to improve their cyber resilience.

They explain it well: “Most successful cyber attacks are not that sophisticated, and can be prevented by taking a few simple steps.”

Backups Are Your Safety Net

Imagine spending hours crafting your perfect site, only for something to break after a rogue plugin update. Without a reliable backup, recovery can be a nightmare.

That’s why regular, automated backups are essential – ideally stored in a secure, off-site location. If something goes wrong, a recent backup can be the difference between a quick fix and a costly rebuild.

So… How Do You Keep On Top of It All?

If you’re a techie at heart, you might actually enjoy this side of things. But if you’d rather spend your time running your business, walking the dog, or finally finishing that book that’s been sitting on your nightstand for six months, there’s no shame in getting a helping hand.

At Web Wisdom, I offer a friendly, flexible Website Maintenance Service that takes the backend burden off your shoulders. I keep your WordPress site updated, secure, and backed up – so you don’t have to worry about it. Final Thoughts

Website maintenance might not be glamorous, but it’s essential. A little regular care keeps your site fast, functional, and safe – so your visitors get the best possible experience every time they land on your homepage.

Whether you manage it yourself or prefer to hand it off, the important thing is that it gets done.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed or just want to chat about what’s involved, I’m always happy to have a no-pressure conversation. I promise no jargon (unless you want it), no hard sell – just clear advice from someone who genuinely wants your website to do well.

How much does a website cost?

Good question!

And as with many such questions, the answer is “It depends!”

Professionally built websites can start from around £500 for a very simple build but can easily head up towards £2000-£10,000+ for larger or more bespoke projects.

You need to consider what your website needs to be able to do in order to make it work well for your business.

Do you need a “shop window” that showcases your products or services and helps your clients to build confidence in your skills and quality?

Do you need a specific functionality such as a booking or payment platform?

How soon do you need your site to be ready?

All of these factors will be taken into consideration when your web developer puts together a quote for you. Best advice? Make sure you know what you want and communicate that clearly with your developer.

And if you’re not sure what you need yet, ask! If you can give your developer an overview of your business and what you want to achieve, they should be able to guide you on the kind of site that will best suit you.
