Pay Monthly Websites: Are They Worth It for Small Businesses?

There comes a point in many businesses when the website that got you started just isn’t keeping up anymore.

Maybe you built it yourself a few years ago using Wix, Squarespace or WordPress. Perhaps a friend helped you put something together. At the time, it did exactly what you needed it to do.

Every website serves a purpose for a season. The challenge isn’t starting with a DIY website – it’s recognising when your business has grown beyond it.

Because your business has grown, your services have evolved and you’ve become more confident in what you offer.

And your website… hasn’t quite come along for the ride.

The trouble is, you start looking into a professionally designed website and quickly discover that it’s a significant investment. One that’s difficult to justify when cash flow is tight, even if you know your website is holding you back.

So you tell yourself you’ll update it “when things quieten down.”

Or “next quarter.”

Or “next year.”

Sound familiar?

If so, you’re certainly not alone.

The hidden cost of standing still

Keeping an outdated website isn’t a failure. In fact, for many businesses, it’s a sensible decision for a while. But eventually, doing nothing starts to have its own cost.

Perhaps you’re reluctant to send people to your website because it no longer reflects the quality of your business. Maybe you’re spending hours trying to make small changes yourself, only to end up frustrated and no further forward. Or perhaps potential clients are leaving because they can’t quickly find the information they need.

None of these problems usually happen overnight.

They creep in gradually, until one day you realise your website has become something you work around instead of something that works for you.

The good news?

A brand-new website isn’t the only option.

Option 1: Keep your DIY website

Let’s start with something that might surprise you: not everyone needs a professionally built website.

If your current site:

  • Clearly explains what you do
  • Reflects your business today
  • Works well on mobile devices
  • Loads quickly
  • Generates regular enquiries
  • Is easy for you to update

…then it may still be doing a perfectly good job.

A few content updates, some refreshed images and a little maintenance could be all it needs. There’s no prize for replacing a website that’s already working well.

If this feels like you, have a look at my blog on What Your Website Should Say (and What It Can Stop Saying), to find out how to check if your content could do with some tweaking.

Option 2: Save up for a bespoke website

For some businesses, waiting is the right decision.

If you’re still refining your services, planning a rebrand, or simply want to invest in a larger bespoke project later on, saving up can make perfect sense. A professionally designed website is a significant investment, and there’s nothing wrong with taking your time to prepare for it.

The important thing is making a conscious decision rather than leaving your website in limbo for years because the next step feels out of reach.

Option 3: Spread the cost with a pay monthly website

This is the option many business owners don’t realise exists.

A pay monthly website allows you to benefit from a professionally designed website without needing to find the full cost upfront.

Instead of delaying your new website for another year (or two), you can spread the investment over manageable monthly payments while your website starts working for your business now.

For many established small businesses, freelancers and charities, that makes the difference between staying stuck and moving forward.

Is a pay monthly website right for you?

Like any service, the answer is: it depends.

A pay monthly website could be a great fit if:

  • Your DIY website no longer reflects your business.
  • You’re embarrassed to share your website.
  • You’d benefit from a professional website now rather than later.
  • Managing cash flow is more important than paying everything upfront.
  • You’d rather focus on running your business than wrestling with your website.

It might not be the right choice if:

  • You already have the budget available to pay upfront.
  • You’re looking for a highly bespoke website with complex functionality or e-commerce.
  • You’re uncomfortable committing to a minimum contract term.
  • Your current website is still meeting your needs perfectly.

Choosing the right option isn’t about finding the “best” solution.

It’s about finding the solution that’s right for your business.

Before you sign up, ask these questions

Not all pay monthly website services are the same.

Before you commit, it’s worth asking a few questions.

  • Who owns the website?
  • Can I move my website elsewhere in the future?
  • What’s included in the monthly cost?
  • What isn’t included?
  • Is hosting part of the package?
  • Are updates and security covered?
  • What happens when the minimum term ends?

Understanding the answers now can save a lot of confusion later.

Why I created my Pay Monthly Website service

I created this service because I kept meeting brilliant businesses whose websites no longer represented who they were.

Not because they didn’t care or because they weren’t successful, but because a professional rebuild simply wasn’t possible as a large upfront investment.

I wanted to offer another option, one that gives businesses access to a professionally designed WordPress website without the financial hurdle of paying everything at once. And just as importantly, I wanted it to be transparent.

I’ll always be honest if I think another option would suit you better, because my goal isn’t simply to sell you a website. It’s to help you make an informed decision that supports your business for years to come.

Not sure which option is right?

If you’ve been quietly wondering whether your website is still doing your business justice, I’d love to help you explore your options.

It might be a pay monthly website. It might be a traditional bespoke website. Or it may just be that your current website simply needs a little attention. Either way, you’ll leave with a clearer understanding of what’s possible and what the best next step looks like for your business. If that would be helpful, feel free to book in a no-obligation chat.

If you’d like to learn more about how my Pay Monthly Website service works, what’s included, and whether it’s the right fit for you, take a look at the service page or get in touch for a friendly, no-pressure chat.

How much does a website cost?

Good question!

And as with many such questions, the answer is “It depends!”

Professionally built websites can start from around £500 for a very simple build but can easily head up towards £2000-£10,000+ for larger or more bespoke projects.

You need to consider what your website needs to be able to do in order to make it work well for your business.

Do you need a “shop window” that showcases your products or services and helps your clients to build confidence in your skills and quality?

Do you need a specific functionality such as a booking or payment platform?

How soon do you need your site to be ready?

All of these factors will be taken into consideration when your web developer puts together a quote for you. Best advice? Make sure you know what you want and communicate that clearly with your developer.

And if you’re not sure what you need yet, ask! If you can give your developer an overview of your business and what you want to achieve, they should be able to guide you on the kind of site that will best suit you.
