Websites can vary massively in what they offer both the owner and the user. Some will be all-singing, all-dancing e-commerce stores, others will be a community space to engage and collaborate, others again will be promotional sites that showcase your business, services, products and values.
And as with many things, what your site delivers for you depends on what you do with it.
But whatever your site is designed to do, there are some things that every site should have in common:
Inform: your site should be clear and informative. The user should be able to see at a glance what your business is about and how it will help them.
Engage: your site should engage its users, guiding them to take the actions you set out.
Convert: whether it’s getting in contact with you or directly purchasing a product, your site should be a tool to convert its users into your clients.
Measure: Data is key! You want to be able to measure the effectiveness of your site so you can work on constantly improving it. Knowing who your users are and what they’re doing on your site will help you target your dream clients more effectively. It’s all about small steps to success!
Good question!
And as with many such questions, the answer is “It depends!”
Professionally built websites can start from around £500 for a very simple build but can easily head up towards £2000-£10,000+ for larger or more bespoke projects.
You need to consider what your website needs to be able to do in order to make it work well for your business.
Do you need a “shop window” that showcases your products or services and helps your clients to build confidence in your skills and quality?
Do you need a specific functionality such as a booking or payment platform?
How soon do you need your site to be ready?
All of these factors will be taken into consideration when your web developer puts together a quote for you. Best advice? Make sure you know what you want and communicate that clearly with your developer.
And if you’re not sure what you need yet, ask! If you can give your developer an overview of your business and what you want to achieve, they should be able to guide you on the kind of site that will best suit you.
